Copyright and terms of service

Images in this collection are hosted on the understanding that they are in the public domain, or that we otherwise have the right to reproduce and display them. Digital copies were obtained from publicly accessible sources, in accordance with those sources’ terms of service and applicable copyright law as we understood them at the time of acquisition.

Hosting an image here is not a determination that the underlying work is in the public domain, that any particular use is authorized, or that the source’s terms of service have been satisfied in every case. Catalog information is provided as archived and may contain errors.

The latest catalog year in this collection is 1924. Under U.S. law, copyright in works published in 1924 expired at the end of 2019, so those works entered the public domain on January 1, 2020. Duke University School of Law’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain marked that date as Public Domain Day 2020, noting that the public could then treat 1924 publications as free to use without inconclusive term research. We used 1924 as a conservative cutoff and audited the collection against it to confirm that the images we hold were consistent with public-domain status as then understood.

If you believe an image is hosted in violation of copyright, or was obtained or displayed in breach of a source’s terms of service, please contact timothy@gonzalez-art-foundation.org with your concerns. Include:

• A link to the image on this site, or the source name and image id shown on the artwork page
• A description of the issue, including the rights or terms you believe are implicated
• Your name and a working email address
• If you are asserting a copyright interest, a statement of your relationship to the rights holder

Reports will be reviewed in good faith. Where we conclude that an image should not remain in the collection, it will be removed or otherwise restricted.
